St Cuthbert’s Church has been the beating heart of the valley for over 1000 years. It has been a continuous place of worship since it’s inception and the graveyard offers a rich history of the lives and loves of the residents of Kentmere, many of whose descendants still live and work in the valley.
Today there are many who come frequently to St Cuthbert’s; to shelter from the weather, to visit the graves, to spend a quiet moment in the church assured of peace and an uplifting view, to read about the local history of the valley, to admire the tapestry kneelers, to sing in the choir, and/or attend a service. In the last few years St Cuthbert’s has hosted baptisms, weddings and funerals, and for many people, the knowledge that there is a sacred space close at hand, where prayers are said for the community and where life’s milestones can be marked and celebrated by all, is valued.
The parishes and priests of the Church of England are financed through donations from the parishioners and other supporters of the parish. St Cuthbert’s has some regular donors, but many are elderly. Alongside this, the costs of running the church, only increase. We urgently need more supporters to keep the church open.
